Frequently Asked Questions

How is a Convertible Solutions template seal formed?
Folding the form aligns patterns of co-hesive glue, which have been pre-applied to the document during manufacturing. Once folded, the document should be placed under pressure by flat bed cutter clamps to apply 400 PSI to seal the glues.

Why is pressure seal glue called cohesive and not adhesive?
Unlike a standard adhesive, a cohesive requires two patterns placed on top of each other to create the bond. In the case of a pressure seal cohesive, pressure is required to activate the bond. An adhesive glue will stick to any substance and does not require another glue surface to bond.

If pressure activates the cohesive why doesn't pressure from a laser printer cause the activation?
Cohesive glue only reacts when it comes in contact with itself under pressure. Any other pressure and heat has no affect on the cohesive glue.

Can heat or extreme cold affect cohesive glues?
Once manufactured, cold or heat will not affect the product as long as the product is properly stored. The product should be acclimated to a print room environment for approximately four (4) hours before imaging.

Are there any special handling issues that need to be considered before or after imaging?
The product must be kept in its original wrap to protect it from air and light. Forms that are left exposed to air and light will deteriorate in bonding performance. Unused sheets and rolls should be rewrapped or placed back in their original package for proper storage. Refer to Product Handling information on the About page for more information.

What is pre-converted substrates?
The paper is delivered with all perforations, scores, die cuts, and glues in-position. After printing, the only required post-press converting is to finish with folding and pressure sealing equipment.

How can I tell if I have a good candidate for a Convertible Solutions product?
Most often any product that is placed and mailed in an envelope is a likely candidate for our direct mail templates. Our Custom Template division can assist you in creating special applications to fit your needs. Contact your sales representative for design solutions.

Doesn't the cohesive have little capsules that break under pressure?
Cohesive glue is not microencapsulated and therefore will not adhere to any substrate other than itself.

Why doesn't my form seal tightly?
Check to ensure the product has been properly packaged and acclimated in the print environment for the correct amount of time before imaging. Extended exposure to light and air will cause the glue to be less effective. Make sure you are using enough pressure to bond the glues. Be sure not to print over the glue or where the glue will adhere.

Can any paper be used for my applications?
No. Only specific papers are compatible with cohesive glue technology. Use of alternative papers is possible but should be tested.

What about basis weight of the paper?
The basis weight limitations are related more to the press specifications and folding equipment than they are to the cohesive glue. Consult your representative for advise on the proper paper for an application.

What is the shelf life of cohesive glues?
Normal shelf life of product utilizing cohesives is nine months to one year from production date, assuming proper packaging and storage. Forms that are left exposed to light and air will see a rapid deterioration in sealing performance. Unused templates should be placed back inside their original package until the next use.

Can I use a cohesive template with a press that uses fuser oil?
Due to the nature of the fuser oil flood coating the entire sheet while printing, the performance of our glues is adversely impacted. Therefore, it is necessary that customers with presses utilizing fuser oil run confirmation tests using our products on the press first to evaluate glue performance before ordering and running production. Call us to request your FREE 25 sheet sample pack to test on your press.

Why is my template jamming in the folder?
There are a variety of reasons for paper jamming. The heat used in imaging causes a natural curl in the paper, which can cause jamming and folder feeding issues. Feed the sheets curl side down to help this issue. Fan the sheets before folding to allow air to separate the sheets from one another.
